The Applications should be sent by 2016-06-30 (17:00 KST). A photo of the diploma should be presented when the candidate joins the KASI.
○ The following is for allThe successful candidate will be provided with the remuneration (ing from around 32,400,000 KRW(about 29,000 USD) per annum excluding severance pay) depending on qualification, research budget and financial supplement for health insurance and national pension, one-way airfare to join the KASI (economy class), and a dormitory room for single/shared occupancy if needed. The KASI is committed to increasing its diversity and welcomes applications from women, minorities and people with disabilities.
(1) Lunar and Planetary Science
The planetary science group at the KASI invites successful applications for a postdoctoral position in planetary science to work with Dr. Young-Jun Choi. The group is actively participating in Korean lunar exploration program to develop onboard instruments such as imaging camera and infrared spectrometer, and to analyze either existing archive or simulated dataset. For this position we call for enthusiastic and creative scientists to work on lunar and planetary science. The position is available from September 1, 2016 however the ing date of appointment is negotiable. The position is opened for two years, with the possibility of extending to third year, depending on his/her research performance and mutual agreement.
※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Young-Jun Choi (yjchoi@kasi.re.kr)
(2) Evolved Stars or Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN)
The KASI invites applications for one postdoctoral position in radio astronomy to work on evolved stars in our Galaxy or AGNs using the KVN (Korean VLBI Network, http://kvn.kasi.re.kr) and KaVA (KVN and VERA Array, http://kava.kasi.re.kr). The preferred beginning date is September 2016, but it is negotiable. The period will be two years with a possible one year extension upon successful performance. The successful applicant is expected to spend up to 30% of his/her time to support the operations of KVN and KaVA.
※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Kee-Tae Kim (ktkim@kasi.re.kr)
(3) KMTNet surveys of supernovae, variables and galaxies
KASI invites applications for a postdoctoral position for the researches utilizing KMTNet survey data on supernovae, variable objects, galaxies, and AGN. KMTNet (Korea Microlensing Telescope Network) is three identical 1.6m telescope systems with 2 deg X 2 deg FOV CCDs in CTIO, SAAO, and SSO, which ensures 24-hour coverage of the southern hemisphere. KMTNet ed official observations in 2015 October and we secured 17% time of all three telescopes for five years for our KMTNet Supernova Project (PI=Professor Dae-Sik Moon, University of Toronto). We are routinely observing external galaxies mainly for investigating supernovae and transient objects and we are accumulating huge amount of data on galaxies which make it possible to do researches on various objects like supernovae, variable stars/objects, galaxies, AGN, etc. For example, by repeated observations, we obtain very deep exposures with multiple filters for certain galaxies.
The ing date for the successful candidate is 1st of September 2016, which is negotiable. The positions are initially for two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on the research performance, mutual agreement or funding situation. The position is expected to spend about 50% of time for the project, while the other half can be used for his/her own research.
※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Sang Chul Kim (sckim@kasi.re.kr).
(4) KMTNet Microlensing Science
The KASI invites applications for one postdoctoral position for working on microlensing using the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), which has initiated a 24-hour continuous observations toward the Galactic bulge using a 1.6 m wide-field telescope at each of three different sites in Chile, Australia, and South Africa. For the position, we are interested in applicants familiar with data processing and analysis of microlensing events. The preferred beginning date is September 2016, but it is negotiable. The period will be two years with a possible one year extension upon successful performance.
※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Sun-Ju Chung (sjchung@kasi.re.kr)
(5) Optical Telescope and Instrumentation
The Optical Astronomical Technology Group at the KASI invites applications for postdoctoral positions in the area of optical telescope and instrumentation to work for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) relevant design studies, engineering, and/or testing. The positions are available as early as September 2016 and the ing date is negotiable. The period will be two (2) years with the possibility of a third year extension depending on research performance and funding situation.
KASI is one of the major partners in the GMT consortium and the Optical Astronomical Technology Group is involved in various projects to develop the GMT telescope and its first generation instruments such as the GMT Fast-steering Secondary Mirror (FSM), the G-CLEF spectrograph, and the GMTNIRS spectrograph. The group is collaborating with NOAO, SAO, the Carnegie observatories, and UT Austin for those projects. The mission of the group also includes development of technology for the telescopes and instruments of the local KASI observatories.
For one of the positions, we are particularly interested in applicants to work on the design and engineering of optomechanical and/or control systems for the GMT FSM and/or the GMT instruments.
For the other position, we are interested in applicants to work on optical metrology such as the CGH testing to examine the optical components of the GMT FSM and the GMT instruments including the 1-m aspherical off-axis mirror of the FSM.
※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Sungho Lee (leesh@kasi.re.kr)
(6) Computational Astrophysics
As of January 2016, KASI has launched Computational Astrophysics Program with a plan to establish Computational Astrophysics Group under the Center for Theoretical Astronomy. The scientific scopes of the group include studies of computation-intensive problems (gas dynamics, MHD, PIC, radiation transfer, N-body, data processing, and etc.) for various astrophysical objects, ranging from planets, stars, and galaxies, to cosmology, as well as set-ups of common computational tools (various codes, visualization, computing/data center, etc.).
Outstanding candidates in all fields of computational astrophysics are encouraged to apply for the position. The position is offered for two years, with a possibility of extending to third year. Research funds for travel and etc will be provided. The successful candidate is expected to spend a half of his/her time for researches with members of Computational Astrophysics Group and the other half for independent researches of his/her interests. In addition, he/she will help institute Computational Astrophysics Group.
The expected ing date is September 1, 2016, but negotiable. Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy or a related field at the time of appointment. For further inquiries, contact ryu@kasi.re.kr (DongsuRyu, Director of Center for Theoretical Astronomy).
