Permanent Position for Space Plasma Physics in KASI Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), government-funded research institute located in Daejeon, Republic of Korea, invites applicants to a permanent position in the field of space plasma physics. Especially, candidates with research interests in magnetospheric physics (data analysis, modeling and/or instrumentation) are strongly encouraged to apply this position. The nationality of the applicants will not be importantly considered. The successful candidates will join the solar and space weather group where about 30 researchers/students study of solar physics, magnetosphere and ionosphere. KASI supports the successful candidates to extend their original research with various funding programs. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is a government-funded research institute located in Daejeon, Korea. The KASI has recently launched Computational Astrophysics Program with a plan to establish Computational Astrophysics Group under the Center for Theoretical Astronomy. The scientific scopes of the group include studies of computation-intensive problems (gas dynamics, MHD, PIC, radiative transfer, N-body, and etc.) for various astrophysical objects, ranging from planets, stars, and galaxies, to cosmology, as well as set-ups of common computational tools (various codes, visualization, etc.). We are currently looking for a creative and outstanding researcher for Junior Research Leader (JRL) position in the field of computational astrophysics. The position was created to model after the Junior Research Group (JRG) Leader position of MPG (Max Planck Society) in Germany. Outstanding candidates in all fields of computational astrophysics are encouraged to apply for the position. The position is offered for 5 years (initially for 3 years and for 2 more years after evaluation) with a possibility of continuation based on performance. The salary is competitive, above the post-doctoral level, and is commensurate with qualifications. Funds for research expenses of about US $ 20,000 per year as well as those to hire a postdoctoral researcher are provided. Additional funds for further research expenses, postdoctoral researchers, students, and etc may be available through applications to the KASI research programs as well as to the programs of the NRF (National Research Foundation) of Korea. The group is actively participating in Korean lunar exploration program to develop onboard instruments such as imaging camera and infrared spectrometer, and to analyze either existing archive or simulated dataset. For this position we call for enthusiastic and creative scientists to work on lunar and planetary science. The preferred beginning date is September 2016, but it is negotiable. The period will be two years with a possible one year extension upon successful performance. The successful applicant is expected to spend up to 30% of his/her time to support the operations of KVN and KaVA.  ※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Kee-Tae Kim (ktkim@kasi.re.kr) (3) KMTNet surveys of supernovae, variables and galaxies   KASI invites applications for a postdoctoral position for the researches utilizing KMTNet survey data on supernovae, variable objects, galaxies, and AGN. KMTNet (Korea Microlensing Telescope Network) is three identical 1.6m telescope systems with 2 deg X 2 deg FOV CCDs in CTIO, SAAO, and SSO, which ensures 24-hour coverage of the southern hemisphere. KMTNet ed official observations in 2015 October and we secured 17% time of all three telescopes for five years for our KMTNet Supernova Project (PI=Professor Dae-Sik Moon, University of Toronto). We are routinely observing external galaxies mainly for investigating supernovae and transient objects and we are accumulating huge amount of data on galaxies which make it possible to do researches on various objects like supernovae, variable stars/objects, galaxies, AGN, etc. For example, by repeated observations, we obtain very deep exposures with multiple filters for certain galaxies.   The ing date for the successful candidate is 1st of September 2016, which is negotiable. The positions are initially for two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on the research performance, mutual agreement or funding situation. (4) KMTNet Microlensing Science    The KASI invites applications for one postdoctoral position for working on microlensing using the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), which has initiated a 24-hour continuous observations toward the Galactic bulge using a 1.6 m wide-field telescope at each of three different sites in Chile, Australia, and South Africa. For the position, we are interested in applicants familiar with data processing and analysis of microlensing events. The preferred beginning date is September 2016, but it is negotiable. The period will be two years with a possible one year extension upon successful performance.   ※ Enquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Sun-Ju Chung (sjchung@kasi.re.kr)   (5) Optical Telescope and Instrumentation    The Optical Astronomical Technology Group at the KASI invites applications for postdoctoral positions in the area of optical telescope and instrumentation to work for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) relevant design studies, engineering, and/or testing. The positions are available as early as September 2016 and the ing date is negotiable. The period will be two (2) years with the possibility of a third year extension depending on research performance and funding situation.     KASI is one of the major partners in the GMT consortium and the Optical Astronomical Technology Group is involved in various projects to develop the GMT telescope and its first generation instruments such as the GMT Fast-steering Secondary Mirror (FSM), the G-CLEF spectrograph, and the GMTNIRS spectrograph. The group is collaborating with NOAO, SAO, the Carnegie observatories, and UT Austin for those projects.
