The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is a government-funded research institute located in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. We conduct front-line research in various fields of astronomy, astrophysics and space science, develop astronomical instruments and operate facilities in Korea and overseas.
We are currently looking for creative and outstanding postdoctoral scientists. The candidate will have full access to all the resources and facilities of KASI. KASI’s resources and facilities include the Gemini and the MMT through K-GMT Science Program (~15 nights per semester), 1.8-m Bohyunsan optical telescope, 1.0-m Mt. Lemmon optical telescope, IGRINS, KVN, KaVA, TRAO 14-m telescope, ALMA through East Asia Region, and the JCMT through East Asia Observatory.

The successful candidate will be provided with the remuneration (ing from around 32,400,000 KRW(about 29,000 USD at the exchange rate in Oct. 2015) per annum excluding severance pay) depending on qualification, research budget and financial supplement for health insurance and national pension, one-way airfare to join the KASI (economy class), and a dormitory room for single/double if needed. (1) Lunar and Planetary Science
The planetary science group at the KASI invites successful applications for a postdoctoral position in planetary science to work with Dr. Young-Jun Choi. The group is actively participating in Korean lunar exploration program to develop onboard instruments such as imaging camera and infrared spectrometer, and to analyze either existing archive or simulated dataset. For this position we call for enthusiastic and creative scientists to work on lunar and planetary science. The position is available from January 1, 2016 however the ing date of appointment is negotiable. The position is opened for two years, with the possibility of extending to third year, depending on his/her research performance and mutual agreement.

(2) High-precision GNSS Data Processing and Analysis
The Space Geodesy Group (SGG) of the KASI invites applications for a postdoctoral position regarding high-precision GNSS data processing and analysis. The position will be guaranteed for the first two years while the third year would be extendable depending on the research performance evaluation and funding situation. We are preparing the position commencement date of March 1 2016.
The SGG focuses on Global Geodesy detecting the tiny variations of Earth’s shape and its rotation based on primary space geodetic techniques such as GNSS, VLBI, and SLR. Research field covers wide range of precise positioning from determination of reference frame and Earth rotation parameters to natural hazard monitoring. In particular for the position, we are interested in high-precision estimation of precipitable water vapor and total electron content in near real-time. You will have full access to our space geodetic infra-facilities, including 14 KASI GNSS stations and a Microwave Water Vapor Radiometer.

(3) Solar Physics
The KASI invites applicants for a postdoctoral position in solar physics ing from March 2016. The beginning date is negotiable. The position is initially for two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on the research performance.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in high resolution observation, solar flares and CMEs so that they can utilize our resources and facilities for their research. The successful candidate will have full access to all resources and facilities listed below.
The SSW group has built and been operating SDO data center in cooperation with NASA for the easy data access of the Eastern Asian research groups. Also, since 2010, we have supported the operation of the New Solar Telescope (NST) in Big Bear Solar Observatory, USA including the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS), the high resolution imaging spectrograph that KASI developed in collaboration with Seoul National University (SNU). For the radio observation, we are co-operating the Nobeyama Solar Radio Telescope in addition to our own radio telescope, RSRBL at KASI. More information can be found from the group web page :

(4) The Near Earth Space Physics
The KASI invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the near Earth space physics related to magetosphere, ionosphere or upper atmosphere, beginning in March 2016. The beginning date is negotiable. The period will be two years with one year extension upon successful performance. We welcome applications from experts in any of these fields, especially in - analysis using ground- and/or space-based observations, numerical modeling or satellite instruments in the magnetosphere, ionosphere and/or upper atmosphere.

(5) Radio Astronomy (ALMA)
The ALMA group at the KASI is currently looking for a creative and outstanding postdoctoral researcher. A successful candidate spends 50% of his/her time on duty related with ALMA data reduction and user support. The rest of time is for his/her own research. We encourage candidates to apply for this position, who have experience on radio observation and data reduction. We also encourage the candidate to write research proposals to radio facilities available to the KASI and collaborate with people in the KASI. The position is available as early as March 2016.

(6) Evolved Stars or Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN)
The KASI invites applications for one postdoctoral position in radio astronomy to work on evolved stars in our Galaxy or AGNs using with the KVN (Korean VLBI Network, http://kvn.kasi.re.kr) and KaVA (KVN and VERA Array, http://kava.kasi.re.kr). The preferred beginning date is April 2016, but it is negotiable. The period will be two years with a possible one year extension upon successful performance. The successful applicant is expected to spend up to 30% of his/her time to support the operations of KVN and KaVA.

(7) Extragalactic Observational Astronomy
The Galaxy Research Group at the KASI invites applications for one postdoctoral researcher position in extragalactic observational astronomy to work with Drs. Hyunjin Jeong, Jongwan Ko, or Yujin Yang.
The galaxy group at KASI consists of 13 permanent research staffs, 7 postdoctoral researchers and two PhD students. The group is consistently growing and is active in various fields of galaxies and cosmology including supernovae, dwarf and massive elliptical galaxies, galaxy clusters, co-evolution of galaxies and BHs, high-redshift Ly-alpha emitters and blobs, and cosmological galaxy formation simulations.
For the current position, we are particularly interested in a young and enthusiastic researcher to work on either (1) stellar populations of nearby galaxies, (2) nearby galaxy clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies based on the planned survey, or (3) high-redshift galaxy clusters or groups traced by Ly-alpha emitters and nebulae. Preference will be given to candidates with interests overlapping our group's current research interests. The candidate will be encouraged to pursue his/her own research in related areas, and at least 50% of the time will be reserved for his/her own research programs.

(8) KMTNet Supernova Project
The KASI invites applications for two postdoctoral positions for the Researches on supernovae and their host galaxies using the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) system ing from 1st of March 2016, while the ing date is negotiable. The positions are initially for two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on the research performance, mutual agreement or funding situation. The positions are expected to spend about 50% of their time for the project. Although we also consider researchers on the host galaxies, we mainly hope researchers working on supernova or related objects.
KMTNet is three identical 1.6m telescope systems with 2 deg X 2 deg FOV CCDs in CTIO, SAAO, and SSO, which ensures 24-hour coverage of the southern hemisphere. KMTNet just ed its installations for all the three sites, and officially ed observations in 2015 October. Since our KMTNet Supernova Project(KSP, PI=Prof. Dae-Sik Moon, University of Toronto) have secured 17% of telescope time for each of the three telescopes for the next five years, the successful candidate will have opportunities to utilize these vast amount of data.

(9) Variable Objects, Exoplanets and Microlensing
The variable object group at the KASI invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in variable object and microlensing studies to work with Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), which has initiated 24 hr continuous observations toward the Galactic bulge using a 1.6-m wide-field optical telescope at each of three different sites: CTIO in Chile, SSO in Australia, and SAAO in South Africa.
The variable object group at the KASI consists of ten staffs, five postdocs, and a PhD student. The group is doing various researches including eclipsing binaries, pulsating stars, and exoplanets. Especially, the field of exoplanets is very active through microlensing, radial velocity, timing variation, and planetary orbital stability.
For the two positions, we are particularly interested in candidates familiar with analysing microlensing data, dealing with big data, and studying variable objects/exoplanets.
The positions are initially for two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on the research performance, mutual agreement or funding situation. The ing date of the appointment is negotiable. Two positions are available in March 2016.

(10) Optical Telescope and Instrumentation
The Optical Astronomical Technology Group at the KASI invites applications for postdoctoral positions in the area of optical telescope and instrumentation to work for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) relevant design studies, engineering, and/or testing. The positions are available as early as March 2016 and the ing date is negotiable. The period will be two (2) years with the possibility of a third year extension depending on research performance and funding situation.
KASI is one of the major partners in the GMT consortium and the Optical Astronomical Technology Group is involved in various projects to develop the GMT telescope and its first generation instruments such as the GMT Fast-steering Secondary Mirror (FSM), the G-CLEF spectrograph, and the GMTNIRS spectrograph. The group is collaborating with NOAO, SAO, the Carnegie observatories, and UT Austin for those projects. The mission of the group also includes development of technology for the telescopes and instruments of the local KASI observatories.
For one of the positions, we are particularly interested in applicants to work on the design and engineering of optomechanical and/or control systems for the GMT FSM and/or the GMT instruments.
For the other position, we are interested in applicants to work on optical metrology such as the CGH testing to examine the optical components of the GMT FSM and the GMT instruments including the 1-m aspherical off-axis mirror of the FSM.
