Since the successful Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter mission, Korea has focused its national space exploration program on the Moon. According to KASA’s current plan, this focus would continue for the next few years (until till 2032, under the current plan): Korea Lunar Telecommunication Orbiter, Cis-lunar, and lunar Lander missions in 2030 and 2032. The next question is what Korea should do after this series of lunar missions in terms of where to go and what kind of missions to pursue. In this talk, we will attempt to provide a vision for this. We are exploring several possible missions beyond the Moon, including planetary, small-body, cis-lunar, and heliophysics missions. Mission targets and their science goals and objectives are based on not only the latest U.S. Decadal Survey reports (the 2022 Planetary Science report and the 2024 Solar and Space Physics report), but also the white papers (> 400 each) which formed the basis of those decadal survey reports. Furthermore, Korean long-range planning documents and public information on ongoing international missions are being considered. The purpose is not to make a long list of attractive missions, but to identify missions where Korea may make a real and unique contribution, considering scientific interest, available technology, management capability, cost, and possible industrial participation. Last not least, we want to open a dialogue about how to fairly evaluate different mission concepts that explore different science fields (i.e., how to deal with “my science is better than your science”, for example, heliophysics versus Mars versus asteroids versus interplanetary, etc.) This talk serves as an initial communication with the Korean space science community and seeks broader input from the community.
